Preparing for a winter hibernation!

With winter creeping up round the corner and taking into consideration these exceptional times as many places around the world are imposing more lockdown measures . I have been thinking in recent days about how many of our fellow creatures make it a matter of course this time of year to go into hibernation . By first nourishing themselves with plenty of wholesome food then tucking up all cosy and warm until the spring , although it’s probably not possible for most of us to hibernate completely, there is a lot we can do to prepare our mind body and soul for the months ahead !

Without a doubt we need to make our homes our sanctuary’s , rituals like lighting candles where we can enjoy watching the flickering flames while sitting on our favourite comfy chair or big cushions along with fluffy blankets to wrap around us while settling in to a good book . Also taking the time when we can to make delicious home cooked warming food is such an effective way to wind down at the end of the day , and it’s very important that we continue to incorporate a variety of fresh seasonal produce in our diet . Big pans of broth are always a favourite at home with us this time of year , along with warm buttered chunks of sourdough bread which is so tasty and unlike many other breads sourdough is much more easy to digest . I also find that things like small amounts of good quality local butter are much better than manufactured spreads as they’re pure , and we do also need a degree of good fats in our diet . Dairy products of course don’t work for everyone, but other things like good olive oils and anything containing the omega 3s are wonderful for keeping our systems healthy this time of year ! Honey is also a vital winter must have for warming dry throats with hot water and lemon 🍋 and maybe even a little dram of whiskey for the odd Hot Toddy !!

Unlike bears however, well most ;-) it’s important for us to keep up our home yoga practice and sometimes when it’s dark and cold outside we don’t always feel like jumping up and onto our mat , but if there’s one thing I can guarantee it’s that if you get as far as rolling your yoga mat out on the floor it’s almost impossible not to step on to it..
